Our history, in three logos and a few milestones
The name has grown with the business. The work has stayed in Portland.
1954
Rose City Awning Co.
The business starts making awnings in Portland, on the idea that a simple awning can enhance the beauty of homes and stores.
1970s
Flags join the name
By the mid-’70s the logo reads “Rose City Flags & Flagpoles.” Flags and flagpoles have been part of the business since.
2014
Rose City Awning & Flag
The current logo: a striped awning over the full name, with the founding year underneath.

Sewn, welded and lettered under one roof
Fabric covers, welded frames and graphics are made on our own shop floor. Keeping that work in-house means fewer hand-offs, quicker turnaround, and your specs on file for the next recover.

Fabric is cut on the long table and sewn in the shop, some of it on Betsy, the shop’s Singer.
Welding
Frames shaped in-house
Aluminum frames are welded and shaped to the building: dome, concave, convex and straight, finished staple-on or lace-on.
Graphics
Lettering with no outsourcing
Logos and lettering are cut and welded to the fabric on an SGS 100 graphics machine using 3M Scotchcal ElectroCut film.
Installation
Our own crew on site
Our own installers put it up, set the limit switches and walk you through how everything works.

Rose City Awning & Flag was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1954, originally as Rose City Awning Co. Flags and flagpoles joined the name by the mid-1970s, and the current Rose City Awning & Flag logo dates from 2014.

Steve Marcy owns and runs Rose City Awning & Flag. He leads a team of artisans who design, sew, weld and install awnings, and he was featured in the first episode of Oregon Made Today, a podcast about Oregon makers and manufacturers.

Does Rose City Awning make its own awnings?
Yes. Fabric covers are cut and sewn in our NW Portland shop, aluminum frames are welded in-house, and logos and lettering are applied on our own graphics machine. Our retractable awnings are SummerSpace, the only retractable line we carry, and our screens are SummerSpace FlexShade and Futureguard Vivista systems, which we size, install and service.
