Bend awnings, answered

Who installs awnings in Bend, Oregon?

Rose City Awning & Flag has built and installed awnings for Bend homes and businesses for decades, and our Bend team works with clients across Bend and Redmond. We make retractable awnings, motorized and solar screens, patio covers, window and door awnings and storefront awnings, then install them with fabrics, frames and wind sensors chosen for Central Oregon’s sun, wind and snow.

A summer day on a Bend deck

Locals know the “300 days of sunshine” line is more marketing than meteorology. What’s real is how much a high-desert day changes between breakfast and dark, and the right awning changes with it.

  1. 7 a.m.

    Crisp and clear

High-desert mornings start cool, even in July. A retractable awning stays rolled up so the deck gets the early sun.

    Sun at 3,600 feet

Bend sits about 3,600 feet up, where thinner air lets more UV through. Solution-dyed fabric shades the deck and the glass behind it.

    The afternoon wind

Gusts come up across the high desert. A Somfy wind sensor retracts a motorized awning on its own, and zip screens hold their fabric in side tracks.

    Low sun over the Cascades

A west-facing deck takes the evening sun straight in, under any roof. Exterior solar screens cut the glare and heat, and you still see the mountains through them.

Temperatures fall fast after sunset. Screens close in a covered patio against the breeze and the bugs, so dinner outside runs later.

Built for all four Bend seasons

An awning in Bend sees July sun, January snow and everything between. Here’s how each one is handled.

  • Winter

    Snow

Retract a retractable awning for winter. Fixed covers and aluminum awnings are designed for the snow load Oregon sets for your address.

  • Spring

    Wind and storms

A wind sensor pulls a motorized awning in when gusts pick up. Zip screens stay in their side tracks.

  • Summer

    Sun and UV

Solution-dyed Sunbrella and Tempotest fabrics hold their color under strong high-altitude sun.

  • Fall

    Needles and dust

Ponderosa needles and fine dust settle on fabric. Brush it off and rinse with a hose; mild soap for anything stubborn.

From our shop to your Bend home

Our Bend team works with you in Central Oregon; our Portland shop sews and welds the awning. That’s how we’ve served Bend customers for decades.

Permits, HOAs and the Deschutes

Many awning projects are simple. Bigger patio covers, wired motors, riverfront lots and HOA neighborhoods add steps, and we’ll tell you what your project needs before you order.

Rules summarized from the City of Bend, Sunriver Owners Association and Deschutes County. Always confirm with them for your address.

  • City of Bend

    Patio covers and pergolas

A patio cover or pergola over 12 feet high or larger than 200 square feet needs a building permit. Wiring a motor or lights into the house adds an electrical permit.

    Waterway and historic areas

Lots in the Waterway Overlay Zone along the Deschutes River and Tumalo Creek, and homes in Bend’s historic districts, have extra standards to meet.

    Design review

Many Central Oregon communities review exterior changes. In Sunriver, the Design Committee has to approve them in writing first. Check your CC&Rs before you order.

Rural addresses outside Bend’s city limits go through Deschutes County building codes instead of the city.

Bend awning questions

Does Rose City Awning install awnings in Bend, Oregon?

Yes. Rose City Awning & Flag has served Bend homeowners and businesses for decades, and our Bend team works with clients across Bend and Redmond. Awnings, screens and covers are built in our own shop, so you deal with the company that makes your awning, start to finish.

Do I need a permit for an awning or patio cover in Bend?

In the City of Bend, a patio cover or pergola needs a building permit if it’s over 12 feet high or larger than 200 square feet, and wiring a motor or lights into the house needs an electrical permit. Riverfront lots in the Waterway Overlay Zone, historic districts and HOA neighborhoods can add steps. We’ll tell you what your project needs before you order.

Can a retractable awning handle Bend’s afternoon wind?

Yes, with the right setup. A motorized retractable with a Somfy wind sensor pulls itself in when gusts pick up, even when no one is home. On exposed decks we design the awning around the wind from the start, and zip screens, which hold their fabric in side tracks, are another option.

What happens to an awning during a Bend winter?

Retract a retractable awning for winter and it stays protected in its housing. Fixed covers and aluminum awnings stay up year-round and are designed for the snow load Oregon sets for your address. Aluminum awnings hold up to snow, hail and sleet with very little upkeep.

Which awning fabric holds up best in Central Oregon sun?

Solution-dyed acrylics like Sunbrella and Tempotest, which we sew and install, hold their color under strong high-altitude sun. Brush off pine needles and dust and rinse with a hose to keep them looking good.

Do you install awnings in Redmond?

Yes. Our Bend team works with clients in Redmond as well as Bend. Redmond’s residential permit exemptions include window awnings supported by an exterior wall that project no more than 54 inches without extra support, and porch covers up to 200 square feet supported by an exterior wall. For anything larger, check with the Redmond Building Division for anything larger. For Sisters, Sunriver or elsewhere in Central Oregon, call the shop at (503) 226-2761 and we’ll talk through your project.

How much does an awning cost in Bend?

It depends on size, projection, frame, fabric, motorization and how it mounts, so we quote each project individually after a free consultation. Wide photos and rough measurements are often enough for a ballpark first.

Can you repair an awning another company installed in Bend?

Yes. We repair and recover awnings no matter who installed them: new fabric, motors, adjustments and fixes. Send photos of the awning and the problem and we’ll tell you what it likely needs.
