What is an awning over a window or door called?
An awning over a window is simply a window awning; over an entry it’s a door awning or entry canopy. Most are fixed: a fabric cover on a welded aluminum, pipe or rope pull-up frame, or an all-aluminum awning. A few, like the Robusta, retract.

Awning shapes for windows and doors
Side profiles of the four shapes we build most. Welded aluminum frames make the curved ones possible.
Traditional
A straight slope with a valance. The classic shape on pipe or welded frames.
Dome
A rounded half-dome over doors and arched windows, on a welded aluminum frame.
Concave
A gentle inward curve. Softer than a straight slope; welded frame.
Convex
An outward bow, sometimes called a quarter-round. Welded aluminum.
Fabric awnings vs. aluminum awnings
Both shade a window and keep rain off a doorstep. They differ in look, flexibility and upkeep.

How we build fabric window and door awnings
Three frame types, each with a cover cut and sewn in our shop, often in Sunbrella.

Welded aluminum frames
The sturdiest fabric awning. We weld and shape aluminum to fit any space, then cover it one of two ways.
- Staple-on cover: nearly thread-free
- Lace-on cover: laced taut to the frame

Pipe frames
Galvanized pipe, cut and threaded to the design, with a cover sewn in our shop. The classic awning frame.

Rope pull-up
Raise it in winter to let light in and clean it off, then drop it for summer shade. Made for the Pacific Northwest.

Reviews of our window and door awnings

“Nearly 30 years ago we had the privilege of working with Rose City Awning and having our first awning installed. When it came time to replace it, we chose to work with them again.”
“I will use them again when I need window shades and awnings. I was even referred to them by another awning company as they had the canvas that I wanted.”
“I was scared to get one because I was putting it on the front of my house. But it looks good and gives alot of shade.”
Window and door awning questions
A straight-on photo of each window or door, plus a rough width, is usually enough for us to suggest a shape and fabric.
See fabric samples in the showroomWhat is the average cost of a window awning?
It depends on the width, shape, frame type, fabric or aluminum, and how it mounts to your house, so Rose City Awning & Flag quotes after a free consultation. A straight-on photo of each window and a rough width are often enough for a ballpark.
What is a fixed awning called?
A fixed awning is also called a stationary awning. It stays up all year on a welded aluminum, pipe or rope pull-up frame, or it’s an all-aluminum awning. A retractable awning, by contrast, rolls back into a hood or cassette when you don’t need it.
Is a fabric or aluminum awning better for a front door?
Fabric gives you more shapes, colors and the option of lettering, and can be recovered when it wears. Aluminum mounts to almost any surface, usually installs in a few hours, and needs very little upkeep. Both keep rain off the doorstep.
Do window awnings reduce heat?
Yes. Shading a window from the outside stops sun before it reaches the glass. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that awnings can reduce solar heat gain by up to 65% on south-facing windows and up to 77% on west-facing windows.
Can you match the awning to my house?
Yes. We build the frame to fit and sew the cover in our shop, with Sunbrella and other proven awning fabrics in solids and stripes. Come see samples in our NW Nela St showroom, or send photos and we’ll suggest options.
How long does a fabric window awning last?
Many years with regular cleaning, and the frame usually outlasts the fabric. When the cover wears, a recover puts new fabric on the same frame. If we built it, we likely have its dimensions and fabric specs on file.
