Patio enclosures, explained

What is a screen patio enclosure?

A screen patio enclosure closes the open sides of a covered patio, porch or deck with roll-down screens instead of walls or glass. Zip screens lock their edges into side tracks, so the enclosure holds against wind and rain; drop screens hang free for shade and privacy in light breezes. Both retract into a headbox, so on a warm evening the patio is wide open again.

One patio, three settings

A screen enclosure isn’t all or nothing. Each screen runs on its own, so you close the windy side and leave the view open.

  1. Open

Screens rolled into the headbox. The patio is as open as the day it was built.

  2. Half

Lowered partway to cut low sun and give the seating area privacy from the street.

  3. Closed

Zipped into the side tracks against wind, rain and bugs, with the view still through the mesh.

Screen enclosure vs. a glass sunroom

We build screen enclosures, not sunrooms. Here’s when that’s the right call.

A screen enclosure
Keeps the roof and floor you already have. Screens drop when you want them and disappear when you don’t, so the patio still feels outdoors. No framing and no glass, and the view stays.
A sunroom
Walls and glass turn the patio into a room. It’s a construction project with its own permits, and the space stops being a patio. If that’s what you want, a contractor is the right call and we’ll say so.

Portland’s rain and low winter sun are what most of our enclosure customers are solving. Screens handle both without closing the patio in. Patio enclosure ideas for Portland.

Patio enclosure questions

What is the cheapest way to enclose a patio?

Screens. A motorized or manual screen enclosure uses the roof and floor you already have and adds no walls, glass or framing. Price depends on how many openings, how wide they are and whether the screens are motorized; we quote after a free consultation.

Can you enclose a patio with screens if it has no roof?

Zip and drop screens need something to mount to, so the patio needs a roof, pergola or cover first. Over a pergola we can add a Tension Zip screen for shade from above; for an open patio, a retractable awning or canopy comes first.

Do patio enclosure screens keep out rain and wind?

Zip screens do. Their edges lock into side tracks, so the screen holds in wind and sheds rain off the patio. Drop screens without tracks are for shade and privacy and should not be lowered in wind.

Can I still see out through a patio screen?

Yes. Mesh screens cut sun and glare while keeping the view through them, and they add privacy from the street. Solid acrylic awning fabric is the choice when you want to block the view completely.

Are motorized patio screens worth it?

If you have more than one or two openings, most customers say yes. Each screen runs from a remote or switch, so you close the windy side in seconds and leave the rest open. Manual screens are available for a single opening.

Do I need a permit for a screen patio enclosure in Portland?

Screens mount to an existing roof or cover and add no walls or glass, which is a different project from a sunroom or addition. We’ll tell you what applies to your project before you order.
