Metal Awnings in Portland: Aluminum & Steel
Fixed metal awnings for doors, windows, porches and storefronts. Aluminum is the light, rust-resistant choice for most homes; steel adds strength where a heavier build is called for. Both shrug off snow, hail and sleet and need very little upkeep.

Metal awnings, explained
What is a metal awning?
A metal awning is a fixed awning with a metal cover and frame instead of fabric. Rose City Awning & Flag installs them in aluminum, the light, rust-resistant choice for most doors and windows, and steel, where a heavier build is called for. Both hold up to snow, hail and sleet and need very little upkeep.
Choosing the metal
Aluminum awnings or steel awnings?
Most homes get aluminum. Steel comes in where strength matters more than weight. Both come in flat, ribbed or standing-seam profiles like the one above, and we’ll tell you which fits once we’ve seen the wall.
| Feature | AluminumMost homes | SteelHeavier builds |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Light | Heavier |
| Rust | Doesn’t rust | Needs its protective finish kept up |
| Strength | Plenty for doors, windows and porches | Extra strength where a heavier build is called for |
| Typical use | Most home door and window awnings | Where the span or the load asks for more |
| Install | Usually a few hours | Planned with the build |
Metal awning vs. fabric awning
We build both, so the advice is straight: metal when upkeep and weather come first, fabric when the look, the shape or a logo matters more.

Metal awning questions
Are metal awnings better than fabric?
For upkeep and weather, usually: a metal awning holds snow, hail and sleet and asks for very little care. Fabric wins on shape, color and branding, and can be recovered when it wears. We build both and will tell you which suits the house.
Aluminum or steel: which metal awning is right for my house?
For most front doors, windows and porches, aluminum. It’s light, it doesn’t rust and it usually installs in a few hours. Steel is heavier and stronger, so it comes in where a bigger span or a heavier build calls for it, and its protective finish needs keeping up.
How long do metal awnings last?
With no fabric to fade or recover, a metal awning needs very little: an occasional wash, and on steel, keeping the finish intact. It holds up to snow, hail and sleet through Portland winters.
Can a metal awning go on brick, siding or stucco?
Yes. Metal awnings mount to almost any exterior surface. At the consultation we check what’s behind the surface so the awning is anchored properly.
How long does it take to install an aluminum awning?
Usually a few hours. The awning arrives ready to mount, so there’s no frame to build on site.
Do you install metal awnings on commercial buildings?
Yes. Beyond awnings, we install bolt-on architectural metal systems on commercial façades, including the Tuscany Trellis, Seattle Canopy, Colorado Canopy, Hollywood Sunscreen, Caribbean Shutters and Decorative Wall System. See commercial awnings for storefront work.
How much does a metal awning cost?
It depends on the metal, the width, the style and how it mounts, so Rose City Awning & Flag quotes after a free consultation. A straight-on photo of each door or window and a rough width are often enough for a ballpark.
