Patio awnings, explained
Which patio awning is right for a Portland backyard?
A patio awning is any awning that shades a patio, deck or porch. In Portland most are retractable, so the deck gets sun in spring and open sky on a clear evening. A fixed awning or canopy stays up year-round for cover you can count on in the rain, and a free-standing Open Air Cabana shades a patio that isn’t against a wall.
Retractable, fixed or free-standing?
The three patio awnings we build, side by side. Most Portland decks end up with a retractable; the other two win when the patio needs cover every day or sits away from the house.

What Portland homeowners say about their patio awnings
In their words
“Great awnings, after living with them for a couple seasons I can confidently report they have transformed our deck. Now it is a living space we can use anytime and not a hot oven in the summer.”
“We had them install a motorized 15 foot awning on our garage to give shade over our deck. It looks great and works perfectly.”
“I had two retractable awnings made and installed on my lower and upper deck. They are beautiful and work very well.”
Patio awning questions
What is the best awning for a patio in Portland?
For most Portland decks and patios, a retractable awning: you get shade on hot afternoons and sun the rest of the year, and it retracts for storms. If the patio needs cover every day, a fixed fabric awning or canopy is the better tool. For a patio away from the house, a free-standing Open Air Cabana.
How much does a patio awning cost?
It depends on width and projection, whether it’s retractable or fixed, motorized or manual, the mounting surface and the fabric. Rose City Awning & Flag quotes each awning after a free consultation. Photos and rough measurements are often enough for a ballpark.
Can a patio awning stay out in the rain?
A fixed awning or canopy is built to. A retractable awning handles light rain, since the arms set a pitch that sheds water, but it should be retracted in heavy rain or wind, or fitted with a wind sensor that retracts it for you.
Do you install deck awnings on a second-story deck?
Yes. We install retractable awnings on upper decks, mounted to the wall or the roof. The consultation checks the mounting surface and the height before we size the awning.
What’s the difference between a patio awning and a patio cover?
A patio awning is fabric on a frame that mounts to the house, retractable or fixed. A patio cover or canopy is a stationary fabric roof on posts or a welded frame, so it can cover a patio, dock or walkway away from the wall. We build both; see patio covers and canopies.
Who installs the awning?
Our own crew. The people who built your awning install it, set the limit switches on a motorized model and walk you through how it works.
