Retractable awnings for decks and patios

A retractable awning gives you shade when you want it and open sky when you don’t. We install SummerSpace retractable systems with Sunbrella or Tempotest fabric, sized to your deck and your house, and run by a Somfy motor or by hand.

Our story · 2728 NW Nela St

A Portland awning shop since 1954

Rose City Awning & Flag has made awnings in Portland since 1954. Owner Steve Marcy runs the shop today with a crew of sewers, fabricators and installers at 2728 NW Nela Street, where the showroom keeps fabric samples you can see and handle before you choose.

A lot of our work comes from people who already know us. One customer came back to replace their first awning nearly 30 years after we installed it; another wrote that we’ve looked after their awnings for 30 years.

Steve was featured in the first episode of the Oregon Made Today podcast, talking about what it means to make things here.

How an awning project works

Six steps, from the first phone call to the service visit years later.

Start with a photo
  1. Call or send photos

Tell us about the space. A few photos and rough measurements are often enough for a ballpark price before anyone visits.

  2. Site visit and measure

We measure, check the mounting surface and talk through sun, wind exposure and how you plan to use the space.

  3. Choose fabric and design

Compare fabric samples in the showroom and settle the frame, color and any lettering.

  4. Fabrication

Covers are cut and sewn, frames welded and graphics applied in our shop. Retractable systems are built to your size.

  5. Installation

Our crew installs, sets the limit switches and walks you through how everything works.

  6. Service for the long run

If we built it, we likely have its specs on file, so repairs and recovers start with what we already know.

Awnings and screens built for Portland weather

Shade is only half the job here. We choose screens, enclosures and awning controls for rain, gusts and long grey shoulder seasons.

  • Rain
  • Wind
  • Grey shoulder seasons
  1. Rain

Can a retractable awning stay out in the rain?

In light rain, yes. The fabric is water-resistant and the awning is pitched to shed water. Retract it in heavy rain or wind. If you want cover all year, a fixed awning, canopy or screened enclosure is the better tool, and we’ll help you choose.

    Best fitPatio covers & canopies
  2. Wind

What happens when the wind picks up?

With a wind sensor, a motorized awning retracts on its own when gusts pick up. On exposed sites we design the awning around the wind from the start.

    Best fitAwnings with wind sensors
  3. Shoulder seasons

Can a patio still be useful in October?

Motorized drop screens close the sides of a covered patio against wind-driven rain, low sun and bugs, then roll back up when the weather turns. Restaurants use them to keep seating open; homeowners use them to stretch the season into fall and winter.

    Best fitMotorized drop screens

“We had a challenging situation: high elevation and lots of wind while trying to protect our view… designed an awning that did the job.”

Straight answers from the shop

Awning questions, answered

The questions we hear most. If yours isn’t here, call the shop and ask.

How much does an awning cost in Portland?

It depends on size, projection, frame, fabric, motorization and how the awning mounts to your building, so we quote each project individually. Send photos and rough measurements and we can often give you a ballpark before a site visit.

What affects awning cost in Portland

Which areas do you serve?

Rose City Awning & Flag is based at 2728 NW Nela St in Northwest Portland and works on homes and businesses around the Portland area. Call (503) 226-2761 to check whether we cover your address.

Do I need a permit for an awning in Portland?

Storefront awnings often do. Portland’s City Code Chapter 32.52 covers structure, clearance and upkeep for awnings, and anything attached to a building has to meet the building code. We’ll tell you what applies before you order.

Can you put new fabric on my existing awning?

Yes. A recover replaces worn fabric on a sound frame and often makes an awning look new. If we built it, we likely have its dimensions and fabric specs on file, which speeds things up. We can add a logo or a valance at the same time.

Can you repair an awning another company installed?

Often, yes. We repair and re-install awnings and motorized shades from other makers, including motors, limit switches and hardware. Send photos and the brand if you know it.

What brands do you use?

Rose City Awning & Flag installs SummerSpace retractable awnings, the only retractable line we carry, plus SummerSpace FlexShade and Futureguard Vivista screens. We sew with Sunbrella and Tempotest fabrics, motorize with Somfy motors and controls, frame with Awnex components, and sell Bolander flagpoles.

How long does a retractable awning last?

Many years, with regular cleaning and the occasional adjustment, and the fabric can be replaced when it wears. We install SummerSpace awnings partly because their stainless steel chain drive avoids the glued rubber belts that commonly fail in budget awnings. In our experience they run 15 to 20+ years in Portland’s climate.
